Pin Trouble

My Sunday did not go as planned -- I still do not know how the Pioneer Woman met Marlboro Man. Jaclyn's bike distracted me. I forgot how fun bike rides are! And I sort of forgot how to ride one. I thought that was supposed to be one of those forever natural things? All my no-hands abilities have been lost with old age.

But I did find out that the Pioneer Woman's love story is going to be made into a movie, so I'll read it soon. The book is always better than the movie...unless it's Twilight. I'd rather see (just once thank you) Bella look at Edward for a few seconds rather than read about that same gaze for 62 pages.
Tomorrow night is the first time in weeks that all the members of Split This can make it to bowling league, I guess we're seriously struggling with team unity. All the other teams focus on beating the team that they're playing....but with us, Jess just wants to beat Andy and Andy just wants to beat Dave and I just want to beat Jess, and we sometimes cheer when our own team members mess up. That might be why our very first game is still our best score. No way to go but up? To be honest, I just mainly look forward to my weekly game of Pac-man once our two bowling games are finished.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's scores. Unless I don't beat Jess.

My new best friend

First I loved her for her cinnamon rolls.

My editor brought in a pan of cinnamon rolls to our desk meeting last week, and I was not extremely excited...they're one of those foods I always eat because they smell so good but I always regret it halfway through, you know? Because they act like they're breakfast but really they're dessert, so you feel gross for eating them before anything else that day. It's just one of those lessons I have to repeatedly learn because the smell of cinnamon rolls pushes that knowledge out of my mind.

So I ate one. And I LOVED it. There wasn't even a hint of regret during the whole thing. I finished it, too. So naturally I had to ask my editor for the recipe for the miracle rolls, and she told me she got it from The Pioneer Woman. She told me she was obsessed with everything about this woman and that I would be, too, if I wasn't careful. She was right.

This woman has single-handedly convinced me that I want to live on a ranch someday. She's a city girl that fell in love with a cowboy, and now shares her story through hilarious-ness and recipes and photography and storytelling...and I love her. After I told my editor that her obsession was totally contagious, she said I wouldn't truly understand The Pioneer Woman's greatness until I read the story of how she met her husband. She also told me not to start reading it unless I was prepared to not do anything else until it was finished.

And that is my plan for this wonderfully sunny Sunday.

Wake up, March.

I never check the weather. What if the day looks beautiful, but weather.com tells you a blizzard is coming? Then you dress in unnecessary warm clothes, you think you're colder than you really are, and you dread this "expected" storm. Then what happens when the sun stays, and you realize weather.com made a fool out of you? I just like to stay away from the touchy weather-predicting process and keep hope.

Thursday did not help my logic. It did, however, lead me to believe that plenty of other people on campus have my same weather philosophy because I was definitely not the only spring-dressed person when all this snow hit. I think looking out the window in the morning should be more than enough preparation for the day. But sometimes Utah doesn't understand that.

And no one told the ducks. I know ducks don't say or do a lot, but I really could tell these two were confused. Poor little guys. Probably both blaming the other for getting the date wrong, when really it's Utah's fault. Come back, spring...

Extra Extra

Extra Extra

My feelings towards writing for The Daily Universe change way too often...one day I'm loving it, and the next day I'm back to being bitter that the 3-credit class consumes way too much of my life. I'm just glad I have the White House beat instead of one of the many random topics other students are facing...like the Provo residential landscaping beat. Ok maybe I made that one up, but it's a little more believable than some of the real assignments, trust me. This story in particular took away a bitter day and helped my relationship with the BYU paper.

Fireside felon running against Bennett in Senate race

Political candidates and firesides — they both fight to be memorable, and some succeed more than others. For Cody Judy, running against Sen. Bob Bennett for a seat in the U.S. Senate, it’s a “two birds, one stone” kind of thing.

In February 1993, Elder Howard W. Hunter, then president of the Quorum of the Twelve, was publicly accosted at a BYU fireside by Judy, who rushed the Marriott Center stage claiming to have a bomb in his briefcase. He intended to have Hunter read a 3-page document, allegedly explaining God’s plan for Judy to lead The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but the speaker refused.

Distracted by a spontaneous chorus of the hymn, “We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet,” led by the audience, Judy was met with pepper spray from a front-row student. Judy was then taken into custody, and Hunter continued his talk on adversity.

“Everyone was complimentary of the students for having the presence of mind to sing that hymn,” said Kent Harrison, a professor at BYU at the time of the fireside. “It was quite a big deal.”

After examination, police reported the briefcase to contain only books and papers. This was, in fact, consistent with Judy’s later explanation that he had only ever claimed to have a BOM — a reference to the Book of Mormon. His “BOM threat” resulted in a 15-year prison sentence.

After serving seven years, Judy was paroled. He has since turned his focus to the political stage, running as a write-in candidate for a Utah seat in the US House of Representatives in 2002. He lost, receiving only eight votes.

In 2004, Judy doubled his vote count to 16 in his race against Bennett for a seat in the United States Senate. And now in the upcoming 2010 election, Judy is continuing his campaign.

In an e-mail interview with The Daily Universe, Judy explained how this year’s campaign will be different from past elections.

“This year I began earlier then I did in 2004 and though I haven’t received any contributions I have the Web site up and my book, Taking A Stand — the ‘Conservative Independent Voice,’ out, which I think will help people get to know me much better then they did before,” Judy said.

Judy is challenging Bennett’s position with a five-point platform, including defending the U.S. Constitution, working for a flat tax, increasing energy independence, securing borders and leveling trade.

“Utah needs to be aware that I have worked tirelessly in Defending the Constitution in every way I could and I certainly agree Senator Bennett and I differ on this,” Judy said.

When asked what effect the 1993 fireside incident will have on voters’ opinions, Judy encouraged they turn to his book for the full story.

“I paid the debt that was asked of me by the law,” Cody said. “Unless you abolish the Constitution’s freedom of speech clause and dictate by State Force that the evidence of my words which was a Book of Mormon in my brief case abbreviated BOM in every Ensign, the prosecution was overstepping the Constitution and I don’t look to it as something that will go down in history as something the state is very proud of prosecuting.”

Banana-napping

I love banana bread. I just never have time to make it anymore, and it makes me sad. So I stole.

My FHE brothers went snowboarding in their gorilla and banana suits (they wanted to take their famous chase scene to the hills). They had all their suits hanging outside to dry when we left their house last Monday, so we replaced their beloved banana with a threatening ransom note and a copy of this picture -- Banana bread by Friday, and the suit doesn't get peeled. We even gave them exciting and mysterious instructions to follow for the delivery since this was all undercover.

We decided to take advantage of our short time with the banana, and take it out on the town. Then we made a personalized Facebook account for our yellow friend and added all the boys that are emotionally attached to it. We figured haunting pictures would mean faster bread.

One of my more interesting visits to the temple grounds...

We pulled up to the MTC to take some pictures, and almost got attacked by deer. Maybe they eat bananas, I'm just not too sure. I just know that Provo deer seem to be weirdly aggressive. By aggressive I just mean unafraid of people, which can be creepy.

Elder Banana, ready to go on splits.

One of the lonelier pictures of the bunch. Poor little thing, nobody even looked twice at it. Provo.

So then we took it to a much happier place to spend quality time with the fam.

Banana bread.
Red Box had nothing banana-related. Disappointing.
The messages on its Facebook page were pretty entertaining. Just your basic false accusations and emotional complaints. I could only handle so many nights of sleep with the suit under my bed though...the guilt started to get to me.

So we had to get rid of it. I felt bad abandoning it in the rain on their porch, but I'm glad it's safe with the people that are strangely attached to it. We may or may not have been caught when we fled the scene...dang it. At least now they know who they have to make bread for.
